our mbsr course Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a structured eight-week program that uses mindfulness meditation to teach people how to take better care of themselves and live healthier and more adaptive lives. Participants have found help with a range of stress-related problems, such as anger management, headaches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, anxiety and panic, as well as physiological conditions including cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and chronic pain. They have also found that MBSR increases focus and concentration, and thus work performance, and helps create a sense of wellbeing. Mindfulness is as simple (and as difficult) as living in moment-to-moment awareness. It is invoked by tuning in to our breath and to every other aspect of our lives. MBSR provides training in meditation, mindful yoga, and relaxation to mobilize mind/body resources to work with stress, pain, and illness in ways that promote growth and healing. We teach how to develop a daily practice that incorporates these techniques effectively into a busy life. Co-leaders Pat Vroom, PhD, and Elizabeth J. Coleman, JD, regularly offer the eight-week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course in Manhattan. They focus on creating an enhanced learning environment through small groups (max of 11 participants) and the relaxed and comfortable setting of a lovely private loft in Tribeca. We both enjoy the experience of teaching MBSR and have found that an intimate atmosphere overlooking the lights of the city facilitates learning and meaningful discussion of course material. The course has didactic, experiential and interactive components. Their program maintains the standard MBSR format originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn: eight two-hour evening sessions and an all-day retreat (which any “graduate” may attend at no charge). We are happy to work with participants to accommodate any unique scheduling requirements. In addition, we teach customized courses on-site in corporate settings, and give one-on-one instruction.
MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli at UMass Medical School. It has been featured in research and popular publications, such as Time, Newsweek, and PBS “Healing and the Mind”.
