What is MBSR? Managing Stress • Improving Performance • Enhancing Quality of Life

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a structured eight-week program that uses mindfulness meditation to teach people how to take better care of themselves and live healthier and more adaptive lives. Those who have participated in MBSR have found help with a range of stress-related problems, such as gastrointestinal, headaches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, anxiety and panic, as well as physiological conditions including cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and chronic pain. Participants have also found that the MBSR program increases focus and concentration, and thus work performance, as well as enhancing overall satisfaction with their lives.

Mindfulness is as simple (and as difficult) as living in moment-to-moment awareness. It is invoked by tuning in to our breath and to every other aspect of our lives. MBSR provides training in meditation, mindful yoga, and relaxation to mobilize your mind/body resources to work with stress, pain, and illness in ways that promote growth and healing. Its success requires a strong commitment to daily practice.

MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and Dr. Saki Santorelli at UMass Medical School. It has been featured in  research and popular publications, such as Time, Newsweek, and PBS “Healing and the Mind”.
